Joseph Kennedy

Joseph Kennedy serves as a Principal at Hall Payne in the Sydney employment and industrial relations team. He is admitted to practise law in both the Supreme Court of NSW and the High Court of Australia, and is well-regarded for his strategic legal advice to employees and unions in complex disputes. A member of the Advisory Committee for Employment and Industrial Law, Joseph holds a specialist accreditation in this field from the NSW Law Society. With a focus on Fair Work Commission and Federal Court matters, he frequently appears in various Australian courts and tribunals, both as advocate and instructing Counsel. His expertise has been acknowledged by Doyle's Guide, recognising him as a Leading Employment Lawyer in NSW. Before Hall Payne, Joseph gained invaluable experience at a private labour law firm and worked as a lawyer with the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and the United Workers Union. Joseph is driven by a commitment to using the law to achieve significant positive change cost-effectively for clients. Notably, his cases include a successful Federal Court appeal which developed principles for union officials' right of entry, and significant reinstatement cases such as those of CFMMEU member Kim Star and a Sydney bus driver. Outside his professional practice, he volunteers at community legal centres, co-founded RUN DIPG (a child cancer charity), and interned with the UN Refugee Agency in Zambia. He remains an active member of the NSW Law Society, APHEDA, and other organisations reflecting his dedication to legal and social advocacy. Joseph's academic credentials include a Bachelor of Laws specialising in Industrial/Employment Law and International Human Rights Law from UNSW, accompanied by a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the College of Law.
