Joseph Petersen

Joseph Petersen is the Principal Legal Practitioner at Petersen Legal, bringing a wealth of expertise to clients in Northern Tasmania. Since his admission to the Supreme Court of Tasmania and the High Court of Australia in 2005, Joseph has forged a distinguished career as a barrister and solicitor. He has profound experience across family parenting and property law, criminal, and civil litigation. His legal acumen is complemented by a strong commitment to community involvement, particularly in youth, mental health, and the arts. Joseph is also known for his past leadership as Chair of the Family Law Practitioners Association of Tasmania. Since establishing Petersen Legal in 2017, Joseph has been a pivotal legal advisor, steering the firm with a focus on family, criminal, and general litigation. His prior tenure at McGrath & Co. Lawyers honed his skills in areas such as mediation, trial processes, and client management, while also pioneering the firm’s technological advancements. Joseph's academic foundation was laid at the University of Tasmania, where he completed a combined Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, majoring in Journalism. His participation in the Tasmania University Union Student Council and the Tasmania University Law Students Society helped shape his leadership capabilities. Joseph was also part of the Deans' Honour Roll, demonstrating academic excellence. His education was rounded out with a Graduate Certificate in Legal Practice, preparing him for the diverse challenges of legal practice.
