

Khami Aughterson, the Director and Principal Lawyer at SKL Legal, offers a blend of academic excellence and vast professional experience. Graduating from Charles Darwin University with first class honours and the prestigious Supreme Court Medal, she has built a remarkable career over 25 years in both the private sector and government. Khami's work spans legislative development, governance, and strategic reform. Her teaching roles as a sessional lecturer in business and family law have further enriched her legal expertise. Khami founded SKL Legal in 2023, channeling her problem-solving skills into family law, migration law, and wills and estates. Her dedication to community service is evidenced by her longstanding involvement with various organisations, including her current role as Chair of the NT Working Women's Centre. She was jointly awarded the Fitzgerald Human Rights Diversity Award 2024 in the NT for her community contributions. A fierce advocate for seniors and new Australian residents from diverse backgrounds, Khami integrates her dual psychology background into her trauma-informed practice, with a strong focus on mental health and substance abuse reforms. She contributes as a board member of the Forster Foundation, supporting alcohol and drug rehabilitation initiatives in Darwin. Her career includes positions such as Senior Strategic Policy Officer for the Northern Territory Government, where she worked on mental health law reform. She also served as a Senior Policy Lawyer with the Law Society NT and practised at KJ Lawyers and Migration Consultants, focusing on family law, child protection, domestic violence, commercial, and migration law. In academia, Khami has been a dedicated lecturer at Charles Darwin University, sharing her knowledge in commercial and corporate law. Her educational achievements include a Bachelor of Science, Graduate Bachelor of Laws, and Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, among other distinctions. Outside of her professional realm, Khami enjoys photographing birds, running with her kelpie, Meisje, and spending time with her family, including her husband Ned and their three children, along with her step-grandchildren and many pets.
