About Mike
Mike Wells is the Owner and Founder of Better Separations, a law firm dedicated to assisting families through challenging transitions with empathy and understanding. Joining the legal profession later in life, Mike brings a wealth of real-world experience, having worked in diverse roles such as banking, management, and disability care. This background allows him to empathise deeply with clients facing stress and conflict. Since beginning his legal career in Geelong in 2001, Mike has honed his skills in both large Melbourne law firms and the Community Legal Sector. His roles have included serving as a Duty Lawyer at the Family Court of Australia and as a Senior Lawyer at the Office of the Public Advocate. These experiences have highlighted the pain families endure from unresolved conflicts and led him to innovate within the legal field. In 2008, motivated by the desire to foster healing rather than prolong conflict, Mike became one of Australia's pioneering Collaborative Divorce Lawyers. He is accredited by the Law Institute of Victoria as a Mediator and is a registered Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner. Furthering his commitment, he completed specialised training in Child-Inclusive Practice and Restorative Justice. At Better Separations, Mike collaborates with professionals across disciplines to support families in navigating the stress of separation and divorce. His approach has enabled many clients to move past turmoil and begin healing. As someone who has experienced divorce and parenthood, Mike offers his clients not only legal expertise but genuine understanding and care. He listens, seeks to understand individual stories, and provides compassionate guidance through difficult times.
