Having completed a Bachelor of Jurisprudence with majors in Economics and Politics in 1968, followed by a Bachelor of Laws in 1970 at Monash University, Jim was admitted to practise as a Barrister and Solicitor in both the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia in 1971. His international credentials have been bolstered by his admission to the Supreme Court of England in 1997, following his success in the Law Society of England’s entrance exam with honours, and his subsequent admission as a solicitor in Ireland later that year. Jim's strong international ties are further demonstrated by his past presidency of the Irish Australian Chamber of Commerce.
