Ryan Norval

Ryan Norval, as the Legal Practice Director and Principal Solicitor, brings a wealth of international experience to the maritime and legal sectors. His career began with two years in the South African Navy during conscription, where he served on several vessels, providing a strong foundation for his future maritime focus. Before pursuing law, Ryan spent thirteen years in the offshore oil and gas industry, gaining qualifications as a Ballast Control Operator, Barge Master, and Offshore Installation Manager. He completed his Bachelor of Law with multiple academic accolades and furthered his expertise with a Master of Law, concentrating on medical law, advanced contract law, and torts. Admitted to the bar in South Africa in 2005, Ryan held private chambers before moving to Australia in 2015. He retains the right of appearance in the High Court of South Africa and remains actively engaged with the National Bar Association of South Africa. In Australia, Ryan served as the national compliance, risk, and governance officer for an after-hours doctor service in Queensland while preparing for admission as a solicitor. A member of the Queensland Law Society, his legal acumen is both broad and deeply informed by his operational and management experiences within maritime contexts. Within his current role at Pacific Maritime Lawyers, Ryan has been instrumental in providing commercial litigation and maritime legal services, utilising his extensive background to offer practical solutions tailored to industry-specific challenges. His tenure at NXT Legal & Compliance further honed his skills in commercial law, property matters, and fintech. Ryan's advocacy work in South Africa involved appearances in various courts and tribunals, handling cases across corporate, medical, criminal, and family law domains, to name a few. His role frequently involved arbitration, mediation, and providing strategic legal counsel for complex disputes. With his profound knowledge of both maritime and legal domains, combined with practical experience from his time as an operations manager for a ship-repair company, Ryan is well-equipped to tackle the unique demands of shipping and maritime clients. Complementing his professional life, Ryan enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, sailing, and playing chess. He was appointed as a Notary Public in Queensland in 2024, further enriching his diverse legal practice.
