Peter Rankin

Peter Rankin, Director of Rankin Lawyers, is a well-respected figure in the legal landscape with extensive expertise in criminal defence and other areas of law. Since 2006, he has held the prestigious title of Law Institute of Victoria Accredited Criminal Law Specialist, reflecting his dedication and skill in the field. Peter's leadership was further recognised when he served as the Co-Chair of the Law Institute’s Criminal Law Section from 2022 to 2024, and he remains an active member of their Executive Committee. Beginning his legal career in 1987, Peter initially delved into property law, gaining valuable experience with notable firms such as Gadens Ridgeway in Melbourne, and Winckworth and Pemberton in London. His journey evolved towards criminal law with significant roles at the Central Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ Legal Service in Brisbane. His commitment to Indigenous legal affairs saw him play a pivotal role with FAIRA Aboriginal Corporation, leading efforts in securing compensation for stolen wages for Indigenous Australians and later specialising in native title law with the Central Queensland Land Council. Upon returning to Melbourne in 2003, Peter joined the Criminal Law Division of Victoria Legal Aid, where he also provided services through the Youth Legal Service in the Children’s Court of Victoria. In 2007, he established Rankin Lawyers, a firm known for its personalised service and adaptability, with offices in Melbourne and Dingley and options for meeting clients online or at their convenience.
