Ruth Chalmers, principal of Ruth Chalmers Lawyers, has crafted an illustrious career since her admission in 2006 with First Class Honours. By 2009, she had already been recognised as Women Lawyer of the Year, underscoring her exceptional contribution to the legal field. Ruth has become distinguished for her profound courtroom advocacy, particularly in cases involving sexual assault, assaults on police, local court defended hearings, and juvenile representation in the Children’s Court. Having managed over 1,000 defended hearings, Ruth exhibits remarkable skills in court advocacy, cross-examination, and complex legal strategy. With more than 15 years dedicated to criminal law, Ruth has served both as a Defence Lawyer and Prosecutor. Her career began at a Sydney firm dedicated solely to criminal law, and she has contributed to nearly every government organisation in the area before establishing her own practice. Her tenure at the Aboriginal Legal Service was marked by her promotion to Managing Lawyer and subsequent selection to a specialised Legal Aid team, collaborating with barristers from the Public Defender’s office on complex criminal cases. Her expertise in written submissions has been demonstrated in the Court of Criminal Appeal, dealing with serious offences such as murder and child sex crimes.
Ruth's experience extended to the Children’s Legal Service, where she navigated complex hearings and represented juveniles in superior courts for serious charges. Further expanding her legal prowess, she joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and handled Supreme Court Bail applications, sentencing, appeals, and contested committal hearings as a sole advocate.
